How to decide when you need cataract surgery?
Most people can take some  time to decide about cataract surgery. Your doctor can help make your decision with you. Tell your eye doctor how your cataract affects your vision and your life. If doing routine things like watching T.V, Driving, reading etc become difficult ,you might require surgery. In this era of advanced technology, living with poor vision due to cataract is a matter of choice. You can start seeing well within a few days of cataract surgery.

The Surgery -Phacoemulsification

How is Cataract Surgery done?

Today, advances in Surgery make it possible for you to go back to work within 3 days after your surgery.
We perform Cataract Surgery by Phacoemulsification also known as Phaco. In Phaco surgery, a small ultrasonic probe is inserted into the eye. This probe breaks (emulsifies) the cloudy lens into tiny pieces and gently sucks it out .This lens is then replaced with a clear artificial one. The new lens is inserted and it opens up like a flower when inside.

As the incision is very small, less than 2.7 mm, No stitches are used and the incision is self healing.

We use the most advanced Phaco technology by Bausch & Lomb and AMO, USA. The advantage of having Phaco done on new advanced technologies are many.

Traditional Cataract
Modern Advanced Cataract
The size of incision/cut for surgery is bigger, about 7 -7.5 mm.It requires 5-6 stitches to close it.
The size of incision made for surgery is very small, about 2.7 mm.
As the incision for surgery is larger in size, the patient will experience some irritation and watering for the first few days.
As the incision is smaller, the patient is comfortable.
Hard lenses are usually implanted after this surgery.
Soft or foldable lenses are implanted after this type of surgery.
The total healing time is about 4 weeks. The patient can go back to work after this period.
The healing takes place in 3-4 days and the patient can go back to work and normal life faster.
As the incision is larger the patient needs to take more care to avoid infection.
As the incision is very small, the chances of infection are minimal.

  Modern Advanced Cataract Surgery
Once the cataract is removed, a permanent, artificial lens, called an intraocular lens or IOL is implanted. There are two types of IOLs available; non-foldable and foldable. Non-foldable IOLs are made of a hard plastic material, are bigger in size and bigger incisions need to be made to insert them. Foldable lenses are made of a soft acrylic material. They can be inserted through very small incisions. They are ideal for cataract surgery by Phaco.
