As the body ages, changes are occurring in your eyes as well. You may not be able to see or focus as well as you did in your younger days. Periodic examinations with an eye specialist Dr, at least once a year, are an essential part of good preventive eye care; since most eye health problems have no early noticeable symptoms and can be diagnosed only through an eye exam. However, a few precautions can be taken to protect and maintain the health of your eyes.
Wear the right Glass power:
Wearing the right glass power will prevent eye strain. As the eye ages the number may fluctuate every 2-3 years. So make sure you have a eye check up once every two years after the age of 40.
Keep your eyes well lubricated:
As age advances the normal tears in your eye may not be enough to lubricate your eyes. This is especially more so in women around the age of menopause as there is less tear production resulting from the hormonal imbalance. This may cause a feeling of dryness and result in eye fatigue. To avoid this give your eyes frequent cold water splashes, use some lubricating eyedrops as prescribed by your Dr. Avoid sitting directly under a fan or in front of a heater in winter.
Protect your eyes from Ultraviolet radiation:
While some exposure to sunlight can be enjoyable, too much is dangerous, may cause long term problems like skin cancer and cataracts. UV radiation is divided into UV-A, UV-B and UV-C. UV-C is absorbed by the ozone layer and does not present any threat, whereas exposure to UV-A and UV-B can have damaging effects on your eyes and vision. UV protective Sunglasses can protect your eyes against the harmful rays of the sun.
Have a balanced diet:
For your body’s overall good health, a proper well balanced diet is essential. The foods we eat provide us with a wide variety of vitamins and minerals necessary for normal cell growth and repair. Nutritional imbalances in the circulatory system can affect the eye. Vitamins and minerals found in fruits, vegetables, and leafy greens have been shown to be good for our health and vision.
Avoid eye strain while reading:
To avoid eye strain when reading, keep the reading material at the best distance. Reading, writing or close work is best done at a distance equal to the length between the knuckles and the elbow. Good posture while reading helps reduce eyestrain. Try to avoid reading while lying on your back, stomach, or side. Make sure that there is good light on close work tasks and good room light as well. A light positioned behind and over one’s shoulder works well for reading. Also, looking up from time to time from your reading can help keep your eyes relaxed.
Television and your eyes:
Watching television for long stretches of time can leave your eyes fatigued. To avoid eyestrain with normal TV viewing, the following precautions should be observed:
Never watch TV in a completely darkened room. The best lightning conditions consist of a back light and dim general light in the room.
View from a distance of atleast five feet at .Sitting too close to the screen might cause undue eyestrain.
Have the set at approximately eye level. Avoid having to look up or down at the picture.
Make sure your television set is properly installed and the antenna properly adjusted.
Wear lenses prescribed for vision correction.
Avoid staring at the screen. Briefly look away from the picture, around the room.
